Dutch debut on World Championship Headis in Kaiserslautern

On the weekend of Friday 14th and Saturday 15th July, the World Championship Headis took place in Germany. To be precise in Kaiserslautern, Headis’s cradle, in an old factory canteen, almost 200 participants joined this annual event.

The first qualifying groups started on Friday around 17:00, while the last group finished a little after 22:00. Each group played 4 individual matches per group. The Netherlands, represented by Robbert Stolwijk and Michiel de Korte, had to qualify for the main draw on Saturday. The best 16 players in the world were exempted from qualifying rounds, but there were still enough great players to compete with for the Dutch!

After good and sometimes even spectacular matches, both players entered the main tournament as some of the best numbers 4 of all qualification groups. The main draw started the next day around 11:00 and ended for our players just over 3 hours later, due to elimination in the group phase. The level on Saturday was very high and some amazing rallies were played on many tables. Both the ladies and the gentlemen played many exciting matches. The male favourite could not live up to his status this time, but the global number 2 did. The top favourite in the women’s category did what she was expected to do and won this year’s World Championship.

For the Netherlands this was an educational and inspiring weekend. Hopefully the Dutch will have more contenders at this fantastic tournament!
